ExactechGPS® GUIDED TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
A Total Knee Replacement is considered the Gold Standard for advanced osteoarthritis of the knee. This is considered one of the most successful procedures in orthopedic medicine. We have seen wonderful outcomes with this surgery. 90% of cases have proven successful longevity and have lasted upwards of 15 years.
Have you ever experienced your vehicle when it is out of alignment—your car movement doesn’t feel right and your tires may produce uneven wear, requiring you to need a new set? Joints in the body work in a very similar fashion.
When patients require a total joint replacement, proper placement and alignment of the implant are critical to the implant’s overall longevity and function. ExactechGPS® Guided Personalized Surgery combines surgeon expertise with an advanced computer system, similar to a navigation device in your car, to perform your joint replacement surgery with a goal of advanced accuracy and precision.
When it comes to knee replacement, accurate placement and alignment of the implant components are critical to the overall longevity and function of the implant. Traditionally, surgeons have used pre-operative X-rays, instrumentation and special techniques to plan the surgery and calculate the fit and positioning of the total knee implant. While this has worked well for many years, studies have shown the risk of implant failure increases substantially when the implant is outside of three degrees of alignment. ExactechGPS was developed to assist surgeons to meet their goals of precision and accuracy in total joint replacements; it has been shown to be accurate with less than one degree of variability.*
ExactechGPS Guided Personalized Surgery provides a comprehensive view (3-D model) of your unique knee joint and bone structure, which can be difficult to view during traditional knee surgery
Allows your surgeon to easily make adjustments to ensure accuracy and precision based on your unique anatomy
Can be combined with less invasive approaches that have been shown to result in less blood loss and faster recovery times

A minimally invasive surgical approach for knee replacement is designed to minimize disruption of tissue surrounding the knee. Specially designed surgical instruments are used to prepare the femur and tibia and place a standard knee replacement implant through a small incision – 4 to 6 inches. In addition to a small incision, the surgical approach to gain access to the knee joint avoids trauma to the quadriceps tendon and muscles in the front of the thigh.
Other minimally invasive techniques called “midvastus” and “subvastus” make small incisions in the muscle but are also less invasive than traditional knee replacement. Minimized disruption to the muscle may lead to less postoperative pain and reduced recovery time. The hospital stay after minimally invasive surgery is similar in length to the stay after traditional knee replacement surgery–ranging from 1 to 4 days.
Minimally invasive total knee replacement is not suitable for all patients. Your doctor will conduct a thorough evaluation and consider several factors before determining if the procedure is an option for you.
